Instances That May Arise After A Periodontal Surgery

No serious problems may arise in a properly performed periodontal surgery. But there are some instances that may arise during the post operative week such as persistent bleeding, sensitivity to percussion, swelling and the feeling of weakness.

When the dental pack is removed, bleeding may be persistent and bleeding is stopped with pressure, electrosurgery or electrocautery. Once the bleeding has already stopped the dental pack is replaced.

The sensitivity to percussion is caused by the extension of the inflammation into the periodontal ligament. It would be a favorable sign if the severity is gradually diminishing.

There may be a soft, painless swelling of the cheek, lymph nodes and slight elevation of temperature within the first two post operative days as a result from localized inflammatory reaction to the periodontal surgery.

After the surgical procedure the dental patient may experience a feeling of weakness for 24 hours. And this can be prevented by the intake of antibiotics.
